    ABOUT THE CREATOR

At 12 years old I began learning how to sew my school clothes. Initially it was just to supplement my wardrobe but it developed into a way of expressing my creativity with one-of-a-kind outfits. After winning a CA Governor's Award I considered a career in fashion but felt called to work to better the lives of children. Over the years I continued to sew, mainly making outfits for my four children.

In 2005, I saw one of my former high school classmates, Constance Carmichael Robinson, in a fabric store. She invited me to join a quilting class that she was teaching. When I express doubt about learning to quilt she stated “ If you can sew, you can quilt” and with that she opened a whole new world of ever evolving creativity and new friendships! Sadly, Ms Robinson is no longer with us but I know that she would be proud and thrilled to know that, not only have I continued to use what she taught me but have continued my attempts to perfect my skills.

In 2014, I joined the San Diego People of Color Quilt Guild. The Guild's main focus is on African American and African quilting and creating other items, such as Useable/Wearable Art. These Guild members are instrumental in starting my journey to learn more about African American and African quilting and the history of African and African American quilting. I am currently the Guild's President with the goal of sharing our talents, not only with our Community, County wide, State wide, Nationally and Internationally.

I have found that  quilting is a never ending learning process, a creative way to continue a tradition passed down from our ancestors and an opportunity for me to share what I am learning with others and to leave a legacy.

I hope that  will you enjoy viewing my creations as much as I have enjoyed creating them.
